Rogue Mutilate/Prep PvP

By Uncleleo | November 29, 2009

I’m not sure how it happened this weekend, but I’ve all the sudden been bit by the PvP bug.  So I figured I would share some of the things I found helpful getting me ready to head into PvP.

Mutilate/Prep Talentshttp://www.wowhead.com/?talent#fhxcoeMoirsMzZ0xZebfb0hdb:TkizVm

Weapons- Equip two slow Daggers for this build.  This is so Proc’s of your Mind and Wound poisons will happen more often and make the most of your Deadly Brew talent.

Poisons – Mind Numbing/Wound

Gear -This is fairly simple as you can get PvP gear from Raiding or from Honor Points but here’s the chart for PvP Rogues. http://shadowpanther.net/armor-pvp.htm

Hit Rating- 5% with Precision seems to be what everyone says across the board so aim for about 164.  Most of the gear for PvP doesn’t include Hit so you will need to find other ways of achieving it.  Trinkets, Item Enhancements and accessories.

Gemming - So like any other Mutilate build everyone has their own opinion.  In the same way as the PvE build go with whatever gem’s you can get cheaper.  Agility or Attack Power.  The difference is very small.

Rotation- Cheap Shot ~ Mutilate, This will leave you with 5 combo points.  If your opponents health is low then go for a Cold Blood ~ Eviscerate.  If not save as much energy as you can and go with a Kidney Shot.  This will give you 6 seconds to unleash as much pain as you possibly can with Mutilate, Mutilate and Eviscerate.  After this initial burst and your opponent still is hanging around you then have tons of tools to use to attempt to finish them off such as Dismantle, Blind, Vanish, Cloak of Shadows and Evasion.  Use a Dismantle on a Melee target or Hunter who is letting you have it.  You also have Evasion to help keep some Melee damage off of you.  Use Blind when you’re attempting to finish off a toon but his pesky buddy won’t leave you two alone!  Cloak of Shadows ~ Vanish is probably your most important combo to remember because it will allow you to regroup and start with an opening combo all over again.  When you’ve managed to blow through all your cooldowns and find that you’re still having trouble, pop Preparation to try some of these tricks again.

So I grabbed a buddy (Resto Druid) and we dueled a little in the sewers to get my rotation down.  I did every Wintergrasp battle I could and also did some BG’s.  We went into Arena today and had a fantastic 2-8 record.  O’well with time maybe I can get the Spec and Rotation down and can do a little bit better next week.

If anyone has any tips or pointers to playing this build I am all ears!

Hey bro. Just thought I would offer a few pointers and maybe help you save time by learning the tricky stuff early on. I am by no means a pvp god, but I have a fair amount of arena, bg, and world pvp experience.

Honestly I think the best way to get good at pvp is by dueling people who destroy you- especially other rogues. The hardest matchup for a rogue is another rogue. Whether it’s an arena match or simply ganking, the rogue that breaks the other rogue out of stealth first almost always wins. The best way to get a rogue out of stealth is by using a sap macro. There are a lot of these macros out there, but there is one I think is superior in all ways.

Here is a forum post with it:

    #showtooltip Sap
    /console targetNearestDistance 1.000000
    /targetenemy [noharm][dead]
    /console targetNearestDistance 41.000000
    /cast [harm,nodead] Sap

“Replace 1.0.. in the second line with 10.00.. if you have dirty tricks.

This will attempt to sap anyone within your sap range if you have no target, or simply sap your target if you have one.”

That is a pretty essential macro. I would also recommend a blind focus macro if you are doing arenas.

The biggest challenge of pvp is reaction. The goal is to know what your opponent is capable of, know what you will do in a given situation, and be able to deviate from this “pattern” or rotation. The better you are at this, the better you are at pvp. Learn the moves of other classes, and what they mean to you. Try to figure out what your opponent can do to trick you. A popular example is a mage kiting you. Normally mages blink away from you when you are running towards them, but some mages in arenas will blink towards you in an attempt to fool you. You end up reaching where they were and wasting valuable time looking for them, all the while they are behind you casting a spell. In this case, you would want to run towards them, then turn around midway as soon as they blink. If they did use this trick, you will end up right on top of them.

A couple more of my favorite tricks and tactics:
When you open on a hunter, expect him to disengage soon. After you face a number of hunters you will start to get a feel for when they will do this. Try to dismantle when you think they will disengage. I’ve gotten pretty good at this, and it is hilarious when the huntard jumps 15 feet back only to have no bow.

If you are fast enough/skilled enough/practiced enough, you can sap a target, cheapshot the target without auto attacking (either by swinging your character at the right angle or using a stop attack macro), then restealth, garrote, and open the fight with a full five combo points as well as a bleed. The sap will not break unless a white hit or poison hits the target. You can also time your garrote ticks with this, so you can garrote, vanish, cheapshot before sap is broken.

A few final things to note: Warriors are a pain until you start to get used to them. Use your disarm as appropriate. When you dodge, they will hit you with overpower, but you should still use evasion because no other attacks with hit you. When a warrior blade storms, always feint to reduce aoe damage. Then sprint away, or evasion if you are taking too much damage.

Hope I didn’t information overload you haha. Just practice this shit and you will be pro in no time.

Chris, thanks alot for taking your time to post that. It’s very useful and sounds like you’ve got a great grasp on what needs to be done in certain situations.

I am a little overloaded with the info but like you said with time and practice comes those instinctive abilities like you have developed. Slowly but surely I’m seeing some improvements in my PvP play but still have a long way to go. I am definately a raiding Rogue but would love to be well rounded in all aspects of the game.

    Thanks Again! Very helpful!!

No problem. As you get better at PvP you will notice it affect your PvE too. Whenever a raid wipes, you will notice that you are the last one standing or maybe even able to vanish and reset the fight. It brings quite the sense of accomplishment haha. Oh, and faction champs will not only be ez mode, but actually fun for a pvp-skilled rogue.

I actually have a question for you though, if you don’t mind. I am trying to decide what weapons/spec I should use. Currently I am spec’d combat and have a pretty decent gear set. Anyway, do you think I should go mutilate and use the Black Knight’s Rondel and an ony 10 dagger, or should I stay combat. If combat, should I use the htoc dagger or the ony dagger as an OH?

Here is my char in pvp gear, but I have my MH and the ony dagger equipped.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

If you’ve never tried Mutilate in PvE then now is the time to do it. As long as Blizz doesn’t change what the current patch notes are saying then Mutilate is going to surpass Combat by a ton. If you decided to try Mutilate you really need a slow/fast combo for PvE and a Slow/Slow combo for PvP. In PvP your two daggers would be great. Specially the Ony dagger. That gives fits to just about anyone.

I am not familiar with the Combat spec as much as I should be, but I assume PvE the Rondel would be the better choice because of the stat bonuses.

    Hope that helps!
