The DPS Chart – Opened Can of Worms to Follow
By Uncleleo | January 18, 2010
Unfortunately I can’t say where this chart originated from. Because I have no idea. If anyone knows please comment. As far as I can tell(from trolling forums and such), this chart shows the DPS for classes in T9 gear on Festergut in the Plagueworks of ICC. The Festergut encounter is mainly a DPS race and therefore it’s a good place to look at the DPS for all classes. There is movement involved and a little bad luck can mess with one’s DPS pretty bad but for the most part you stand there and spam your rotation. This chart also looks like a range of DPS by each class which would mean the fight was done multiple times.
Here’s the chart that’s stirring up controversy;

FYI This is Pre-Hunger for Blood Nerf. Couple of things that jump out at me. Rogue’s are dominant. This is not a shocker. This is the way it should be. Rogue’s bring nothing else to a fight but DPS. We don’t provide any raid wide buffs to the group. So in my opinion the problem with this chart is not that the Rogue’s DPS is so far ahead. It’s the fact that other pure DPS classes are stuck at the back. Mainly Warlocks and Mages. Classes such as Paladins, Warriors, Death Knights and Druids should not be able to put out more Damage then a class that was specifically made to do damage. I feel bad for Warlocks because they provide so much raid functionality (Health Stones, Summoning Stones and Raid Buffs). But when it’s time to get down to business Locks just lag behind other classes. As for Mages, they compare the closest to Rogue’s as they don’t provide a whole lot of raid wide buffs and limited functionality. Their cookies do taste good but why are Mages out of the top 5 in DPS?
So what does Blizz do? Personally I have no good ideas. The easiest thing is to bring the dominate classes back to the ones lagging a bit. And of course I would hate to see that! The work that would have to be done to bring the pure DPS classes together and ahead of Hybrid classes may involve full tree reorganizing and that’s something that I wouldn’t imagine would happen until Cataclysm came out. So although there will be nerfs and buffs up until Cataclysm I think this issue is here to stay. For at least 6 months or so!
It seems that whether you agree with this chart or not, if you’ve seen it you have made an opinion on it pretty quickly.

Yup, I saw this chart over at WoW.com. I don’t think there is any rogue out there that didn’t SEE the nerf coming, but the argument still remains that rogues don’t bring much else BUT DPS to the table… Mages have a raid buff and a ranged CC, as well as being a vendor machine, (sorry Mages, I know this is a sore point).
All things being said, I agree with you… not much else Blizz can do until the new xpac to close the gap here, though I’m afraid of what they MIGHT try in the meantime O.o

So where does that leave us with ele shamans? As totem carriers? (which enhancement or resto can provide)

@Jason, Personally I love totems. One of the guys in a 5 man group I run with is a Resto Shaman. Not sure what I would do without those totems. But as far as Hybrid classes with multiple DPS specs I think Blizz has done a pretty good job of balancing those. Warriors and Shammies on this chart show only about a 1,000 dps difference between their two DPS specs. The one thing you have to understand with hybrid or pure DPS classes there’s always going to be one dominate DPS spec. In some cases these specs can provide different advantages in different situations. That may be another blog post for someone else to handle. =)

I play a boomkin and we are kinda messed up on this as well. While we may be a hybrid class Boomkins are really jacked in the current content. Can’t dps while running around at all and almost all fights are movement fights. I got lucky and trained my guild on this, I stand in melee and do about 9Kdps for fester. However blizzard needs to check on booms, they can do great dps but its just too unstable, Movement almost makes them useless (minus the crit & hit buff).

@Maken The more and more I do this fight I can see how this chart really doesn’t provide an accurate snapshot of all DPS classes. I’m not familiar with the Boomkin spec but anyone who has non instant casts in their rotation (specifically ranged) would definitely have problems keeping their DPS up in this fight.
